Southern Greece offers a remarkable variety of landscapes, from quiet coastal towns and historic harbors to dramatic bridges, lagoons and rugged shorelines. Its changing light, clear waters and distinctive Mediterranean character create excellent conditions for landscape, seascape and architectural photography. This guide presents several locations I have personally visited and photographed, with a short description, an exact Google Maps location and the recommended time to visit each one.

01 — Cave of the Seal

Located near Loutraki on the Corinthian Gulf, the Cave of the Seal is distinguished by its dramatic natural stone arch rising above clear turquoise water. The rugged rock formations and open view toward the sea become especially striking in the warm evening light, making sunset the most rewarding time to photograph this remarkable coastal landscape.

Access: Drive along the dirt road only as far as road conditions safely allow and park at the nearest suitable point. From there, continue on foot through the wooded area, following the location marked on Google Maps.

Safety notice: The walking route may include uneven, steep or slippery terrain, and the final area has exposed rocky edges. Check local and weather conditions, wear suitable footwear and avoid continuing when conditions appear unsafe.

02 — Melagavi Lighthouse & Heraion at Perachora

Melagavi Lighthouse stands above the Corinthian Gulf at the end of the Perachora Peninsula. Its stone structure, rugged coastal surroundings and open sea views make the location especially impressive in the warm light of sunset. From the southern side of the lighthouse area, a large isolated rock can be seen rising dramatically from the water below.

A designated parking area is available near the site. Before walking uphill to the lighthouse, visit the nearby Archaeological Site of Heraion at Perachora, a coastal sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Hera. A closer view of the prominent offshore rock may be available from the area west of the archaeological site, approximately 100 meters away, but only use an open and clearly safe path.

Safety notice: The route includes uphill walking and exposed rocky coastal terrain. Wear suitable footwear, remain on established paths and keep a safe distance from cliffs and unstable edges. Do not attempt to approach the offshore rock if the route is unmarked, wet or unsafe.

03- Limni Vouliagmenis Lake

A short drive from Melagavi Lighthouse leads to the small lakeside settlement of Limni Vouliagmenis. At the edge of the village stands a beautiful little chapel, and a short walk from there brings you to the narrow channel connecting the saltwater lake with the Corinthian Gulf. Around changes in the tide, the direction of the current through the channel becomes clearly visible, adding movement and character to this peaceful landscape.

04 — Faneromeni Bay Pier, Salamis

The western coast of Salamis Island is lined with attractive coves, small beaches, piers and boats that offer many photographic opportunities. This particular point stands out: a simple pier extending into a beautiful, quiet bay. Park nearby and walk along the shoreline to explore the different views around the cove. Close to the location is the distinctive Holy Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni Salamina, with another pier directly opposite it.

05 — MS Mediterranean Sky

The capsized remains of the MS Mediterranean Sky rise dramatically from the shallow waters of Eleusis Bay. Once a passenger ship, the vessel now forms a striking maritime landmark, especially beneath heavy clouds. You can park at a suitable roadside point overlooking the wreck or walk down toward the shoreline for a closer view facing the ship’s partially submerged bow.

06 — Rio–Antirrio Bridge

The Rio–Antirrio Bridge, officially named the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge, stretches across the Gulf of Corinth and connects the Peloponnese with mainland Greece. Its tall pylons, sweeping cables and long profile create a striking architectural landmark above the water. Views of the bridge are accessible from both the Rio and Antirrio shorelines, offering different perspectives across the strait.

07 — Messolonghi Lagoon

Messolonghi Lagoon is a vast, peaceful wetland landscape shaped by traditional fishing activity. Along a roughly four-kilometre stretch, wooden fishermen’s huts known as pelades, small boat piers and fishing boats are scattered across the shallow water. At sunrise, the soft light and frequent reflections create a quiet atmosphere that reveals the distinctive character of this remarkable lagoon.

08 — Dimitrios Shipwreck

The Dimitrios Shipwreck has rested on Valtaki Beach since 1981, gradually becoming one of the most recognizable abandoned vessels along the Greek coast. Its weathered hull, graffiti and isolated position create a dramatic subject, particularly for long exposures and black-and-white photography. Cloudy or unsettled weather can add even more atmosphere to the scene.

Access: Park near the beach and walk approximately 200 meters east along the shore until the shipwreck comes into view. The wreck is deteriorating, so it is best photographed from a safe distance.
